Google recently announced that it plans to build a Shanghai R&D center in summer 2007, and recruit additional 200 to 300 staff within the same year, aiming to close the gap with its main competitor in China, Baidu. Other than its Shanghai center, the newly-recruited staff will also be assigned to its Beijing R&D center, which officially opened on April 2006, housing up to around 100 engineers. Financial details and the exact date of establishment of this Shanghai center were not yet disclosed.
